Solar PV installation can reduce your electricity bills substantially. By generating solar electricity, you can power your house, eliminating the need for much of the power you may ordinarily have had to purchase from a supplier. This will become more important as utility bills are expected to increase by up to 20% every year for the next decade.
Thanks to the feed in tariff that was introduced in April 2010, you will be paid for any solar electricity you generate, whether this is used in your home or not. This is a reward for using a renewable energy source, and is guaranteed for 25 years. Currently the rate for electricity generated is 43.4p per unit created, and is paid to you in the form a personal tax-free cheque every quarter. On top of this, any electricity that is not used in your own home, is exported back to the national grid. You are paid an additional sum of 3p for each unit created, on top of the 43.3p already generated. This means that if you are generating solar electricity you are not using, for example, when you are on holiday, you can simply sell it back to the grid.
As the feed in tariff is guaranteed for 25 years, it is estimated that your initial investment costs will be recouped in approximately 8-10 years. This means that all money received after this is profit for your home.

Solar PV installation can add around 10% to the value of your house, by making it more energy efficient and cheaper to run.
